1) Try to score tickets to Ghana-Serbia outside the stadium
2) Travel to San City, which is about a 2 1/2 hour drive away.
I made the right choice by going to Sun City.
I picked up two friends of mine from California - Aghas and Mallory. Aghas and I actually work together for the same company, but we traveled over to South Africa separately. After picking them up at their hostel we drove to Sand City, which is basically a complex that has a couple really nice hotels, a couple casinos, a nature reserve, and a world class golf course. It's basically a playground for rich people...
(Please look at my last post for the picture of what the drive looked like, this place is actually only about 20km away from where the USA-England game was.)
The hotel itself was very impressive. This is actually one of the open areas inside the hotel.
The place also had a wave pool, a huge waterslide that went down the side of a mountain, a safari ride, and a crocodile park.
Since we didn't come ready for swimming and Aghas and Mallory were doing a safari some other time, we decided stop by the crocodile park to see the crocs get fed.
Interestingly enough, two of the England players were also visiting the croc sanctuary while we were there. The tall one is England captain John Terry and to his right is Joe Cole. Though I was tempted to, I did not make any remarks about the previous night's England-USA game. I did find a couple of England fans that didn't notice that their captain was there. They went and got pictures with their guys, and when we ran into them a bit later I told them, "That's how nice us Americans are - not only did we set you guys up with a great photo, we also gave you a point last night." They weren't too amused, but since I was, that's all that really matters. We went back to the main hotel area and played blackjack for an hour or so. In a great happening, all three of us ended up winning a little money. It was only maybe $100 each, but that's always good news!
We took our winnings up to a pizza place inside "The Entertainment Center". They had a World Cup related menu with what can be described as "Pizzas of the World". I ordered the Mexican one which was a Cajun mince and guacamole pizza. You know how Cajun those Mexicans are....
Inside the Entertainment Center there was also a place called "The Super Bowl." This was their auditorium and they had it set up for viewing World Cup games. After dinner we went there and took our seats in the stands to watch Germany demolish Australia 4-0. Quite a few Germans were there as there were chants of "Deutschland, Deutschland" going throughout the game.
Now it is almost 3am and I'm back at the place I'm staying. I have to wake up in about 6 hours to head to Soccer City, which is the largest of the World Cup stadiums. I'll be seeing Denmark take on Holland. It has the potential to be a great game if the Danes play as good as they can.
Good night, and I'll post again tomorrow!
Deutschland, Deutschland!! Is Hans there?
ReplyDeleteWow! What an adventure - crocs and Mexican pizza...
ReplyDeleteWait a minute - you didn't get a pic with the guys?
I didn't talk to them at all - I know I would say something mean to them about the game from the day before. If you don't have something nice to say, it's better to say nothing at all.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think there were at a lot of Hans's there. They weren't wearing their Hans hats though.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, and Marcel and I are going to go back to Sun City on Saturday because Australia - Ghana is nearby.
